Patients experiencing acid reflux or heart disease often endure the same level of discomfort and experience many of the same symptoms. In a recent article published by Web MD, in regards to GERD, it outlines several guidelines to gage symptoms as either being GERD related or heart disease related.

• A burning in your throat. This is usually due to excess stomach acid. This happens to be an extension of the heartburn caused by acid reflux, and not a sign of a failing heart.

• Coughing, wheezing, acid regurgitation and high levels of bitterness in the mouth. These symptoms are to be attributed to acid entering the esophagus as opposed signs of heart disease. This is particularly seen in pregnant women because they are more likely to experience acid reflux.

• Any sort of chest pain while taking part in physical activity is due to a heart problem. Acid reflux does not affect the heart during times of physical exercise; instead it produces burning sensations in the esophagus.

• Increased pain after meals is usually a symptom of acid reflux. These pains can be brought on by overeating or bending over after eating. In addition, the extra acid your stomach releases to digest food is to blame for increased discomfort after a large meal.

Because both possess similar symptoms which can cause great discomfort and even hospitalization, it is crucial that you are proactive when you experience symptoms and seek immediate medical assistance. If this article sparked any questions for you or you are simply interested in acquiring more information about acid reflux and GERD be sure to visit the NorthShore Uinversity HealthSystem, “Don’t Get Burned By Acid Reflux Disease” chat, on Monday March 2 at 12:00 noon as Dr. Eli Ehrenpreis will be available to offer further insight.
